Prepping my pots

Spring is finally here in full swing.

The temperatures are still a bit cool but it was enough to pull out all of my pots for this year’s balcony garden.

And let this be known that this is the last photo I will ever take of that awful old barbecue. It has now moved on to new pastures. Well the dump anyway.

After all the talk of vertical gardens and vegetables,  I am going to do things a bit more simply this year. All flowers, a few herbs and one pepper plant.

Condo gardening is moving on up

Well I wasn’t going to do much balcony gardening this year but after Canada Blooms I found something to re-inspire my green balcony thumb.

This vertical garden is a cost-effective space saver by the looks of it. It gets shipped to you and with a little assembly, some soil and some plants you are on your way!

I think this is a good alternative to the many pots and containers that usually fill our balcony. They have a chicken coop too but that may be a bit over the top…

Balcony desk is the best!

Finally! A desk on which I can work AND garden. The wine holder ain’t a bad idea either.

While some of us require a complete desk setup with multiple monitors for work, there are many of you out there who need nothing more than a small space to put a laptop. For those of you, this balcony railing mounted Balkonzept desk is a match made in heaven.

Designed by product innovator Michael Hilgers, the Balkonzept is extremely lightweight and versatile – making it perfect for outdoor workstations or just extra shelving in a small space. The desk is constructed from a durable recyclable plastic that has more than enough room for a laptop and other essentials, and even comes with a built in planter to really drive home the outdoor feeling. This really could be the way to enjoy working and get some much needed Vitamin D that we all seem to be deficient of these days!

Unfortunately, they are only available…

The garden grows

The warm weather and humid, sunny days are helping the city garden go from seedlings to full blown plants.

It appears that 2013 will be the year of tomatoes. Between the Cherry Sweeties, Manitoba, Tiny Tim, and Brandywine we will have much ado about tomatoes. At least Pat will. I hate tomatoes unless they come in a bottled labelled Heintz. But I do like to grow them.

We also have garlic, red sweet peppers, Seranno peppers and some sort of purple ones. We will see how it goes…

The balcony is open

Well I’ve been sick for the past few weeks but not I am back in action and so is the balcony garden.

I’ve been late to the post but have tried to catch up. My flowers are planted, my seedlings are growing and my herb garden already has produced an abundant crop.

Herbs

I’ve done up my hanging baskets and even a little colour in my table planter. This will go on the full table once I have finished painting it this weekend. I’ve gone with stocks and snapdragons for colour and butterflies who meander their way up to our floor.

My little urban achievers — May update

Well we are a month in and so far so good.

My little condo balcony herb and vegetable garden sprouts are working their way out of their cozy little dirt beds and up into the sweltering heat of an already roasting growing season. It’s gonna be a hot one so I hope no one gets burned out too soon. They say it is better to burn out than fade away but I would rather just eat a salad.

The catnip, mint, oregano and rosemary are not from seed. They were well established when I put them out. The catnip is a really trooper. Despite getting plucked more than once daily, it just keeps trucking. The cats however are now pretty chronic now and every now and again I come home to stoned cats and Cypress Hill on the iPod.

The peas are just growing like my grade five science project. I am hoping to see more flowers shortly. While I won’t be graded on these ones I will be eating them and I am a much harder grader than my grade five teacher.

You may have noticed I am not finished my little chair painting project. I ran out of paint and time so I plan to finish in the next couple of weeks. Two chairs done and two more and a table to go.

Bless these carrots. They get bashed around in the breeze but they are growing very well. I am sure, just like my goldfish Leroy (#RIP Leroy), they will only grow to the size of their container, I am expecting great things.

The tomatoes are behind due to our little spring starter mishap but they are coming along nicely. I expect great things. I also expect other people to eat them as I only like tomatoes in ketchup, salsa or other forms of sauce.

Now the lettuce is growing but the heat of our west-facing balcony might be a bit much for it. I may re-evaluate and place it indoors somewhere or bring it in for parts of the day. “Lettuce” wait and see shall we?

The herb collection is going squirrely already. I’ve got too much “thyme” on my hands now. But thankfully this week’s Freshly Pressed contribution showed me how to make thyme lemonade so that may be the solution.

That’s the May update for my little Urban Achievers. We will be back in June.
